Pipe Cleaners & Colanders!

Tuesday August 5, 2014 at 8:26am

Isnt it great when you find things lying around the house that will keep your toddler entertained for a good long while?

Today it was pipe cleaners, which I had bought for craft activities, and a colander. The pipe cleaners cost just over £1 at a supermarket and the pack contained an assortment of colours and textures, some soft and fluffy, others spiky and glittery.

To start with, I just emptied the pack onto the table to see what Jacob (my nephew) would do. He tried to attach them to each other without much success he got the idea of twisting the ends but needed a lot of help. Then I introduced the colander and he set to work straight away, pushing the ends of the pipe cleaners through the holes. He surprised me by putting both ends into the colander to make arches. Being a toddler that likes to line things up, he made a line of arches across the colander.

Once hed filled most of the holes, he completed the job by pushing one end of some longer pipe cleaners into odd unoccupied holes.

Jacobs concentration was lovely to witness and it was a great opportunity to talk about different textures and colours while he developed his fine motor skills.
